The University of Burdwan also known as Burdwan University is a public University in Purba Bardhaman, West Bengal formed by the West Bengal government in June 1960 with 6 graduate and 30 undergraduate departments. It is affiliated with UGC, AIU, AICTE, BCI and it has accreditation to NAAC. In 1960 the then chief minister of West Bengal, Bidhan Chandra Roy initiated the establishment of a university at the premises of the palace of the maharaja. Hence the university was formed with only the humanities division and Science and Engineering departments were included later on. Sukumar Sen was the first vice-chancellor. The main campus is spread across 400 acres and is now an autonomous state university. The University Institute of Technology was inaugurated in the year 2001.
